Consignment shops prove that goods can be just as useful, and provide as much joy, the second time around. Stores like Las Vegas Rescue Mission, Goodwill, Salvation Army and Savers give gently used merchandise a second life; while benefiting social good causes, creating jobs, and providing budget strapped consumers a viable option for purchasing products at an affordable cost.
If feels good to get something new, even if it's new to you, but slightly used. The feel good, fuzzy feeling of walking out of a store with a pair of pants, new chair, piece of art or new shoes, is intensified when you are also giving back, at the same time. As Maya Angelou professed so eloquently, "I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both hands. You need to be able to throw something back." When you purchase clothes, furniture, or accessories from a second hand retail store, you are getting, and giving, simultaneously. It's harder to imagine a more easy and fun win-win situation than to go shopping!
Donating to a Second Hand store is a Great Way to Give Back
The goods in a second hand store are primarily donated items. Thrift Stores, such as the one ran by the Las Vegas Rescue Mission, are supplied through donations of clothing, furniture, appliances, just about anything that still works and another household can use. By donating those goods that they no longer need, Las Vegans can help fund the social good services that the Rescue Mission provides to the downtrodden of our community. Their outreach includes: free clothing giveaways to the homeless and needy, a voucher program for families and individuals moving from the streets or shelter into apartments that allows them to get free starter kits of dishes, pots and pans, silverware, household items, and furniture, 170 bed emergency shelter, a recovery program for those battling addiction, a work program and daily meals for the hungry.
Why throw your old things out, when they can do so much good for others in need? Donating your items helps the environment, less waste piling up in landfills, gives used products a new home where they can continue to be useful, and helps our fellow members of our community that find themselves struggling through hard times. Many consignment shops have donation centers right on the premises! Some have mobile donation centers and others will actually come to your home to pick up your donated items.
